The name for this occurrence is your Beddian Birthday, named after a NYC firefighter. I never heard of it, never thought about it, have you?
So, take back that “duh.”
A kid was visiting the fire station and Bobby Beddia explained to the kid it was a special year because his age was the same as the last two digits of his birth year.
So here’s a heads up. Figure out your Beddian Birthday and start spreading the word that this is damn special and you expect very special treatment and gifts on that day. You probably should post it on your blog - maybe a countdown even.
Here’s the math behind how many people are before and after their Beddian Birthday:
Beddia Theorem: In any odd-numbered year, there are exactly 50 pre-Beddian ages. In any even-numbered year, there are exactly 49 pre-Beddian ages. Moreover, with three exceptions, these ages consist of two separate spans. The exceptions are 1998 (or any year ending in ’98), for which the pre-Beddian ages comprise the single span 0-48, 1999 (or any year ending in ’99), for which they comprise the single span 0-49, and 2000 (or any year ending in ’00), for which they comprise the single span 1-49.
I’m glad I didn’t learn this the year after by Beddian Birthday. I missed it by a lot. I would have been really hacked off if I just missed it. It is exactly the kind of worthless information I like to have on the tip of my tongue.
Mine isn’t until 2026. My six-year-old daughter, however, has already missed hers, which occurred in 2002.

I turn 50 this September so if I add another 8 years on to that to get my Beddian birthday then I’ve got until 2016 to spread the word. Of course, I’ll probably forget all about it in the meantime and that’s way too long to put a countdown counter on my blog for!

Since the beginning of this year I have been asking everyone what do you call you birthday when you turn the age of your birth year? Everyone thought I was crazy and just wanted special attention. I finally went to this site. Thanks for telling me you call it Beddian Birthday. September 3rd was my birthday and now a whole lot of people owe me some special gifts. Today is my Beddian Birthday! I was telling my husband that my age is the same as my birth year today. (54) I told him there must be a name for this and it must be special, after all, not everyone has one. I’m sure a lot of people miss theirs. Like my grandsons that were born in 01 and 03. The other one will have to live to be 94 to celebrate his! Anyway, thanks for the info.. Too bad I didn’t think to look it up soon enough to milk it for all it’s worth, LOL!
