Look What I Found: Mad Magazine, July 1968!

What a find! While rummaging thru stuff, this just popped up. It is pristine - except for the “fold-in.” (If I have to explain, you probably don’t care.)

  • Inside front cover: Don Martin cartoon.
  • Blue Eyed Kook - Cool Hand Luke parody, drawn by Mort Drucker, Written by Stan Hart
  • Al Jaffee - Vex Education Department
  • Lighter Side of: Driving - written and drawn by David Berg
  • An AMBER alert - didn’t call it that, but it was a MAD public service ad looking for a missing “hippie.”

This had to be a confiscated copy, it’s in such great condition. But that doesn’t make sense because I was married in August 1968. Maybe this was a wedding present!

I discovered Mad magazine when I was about ten years old. On a camping vacation in Northwest Michigan. My cousin and I found this and spent the rest of the vacation quoting - and making up quotes - from the magazine.

It was the older Boomer generation’s Simpsons.

I am just so overjoyous.

Oh Lordy, I was a devout MAD reader. My older brother used to get it, and I was reading around that time although I don’t remember that particular issue. Don Martin rocked, and I loved the movie parodies too — I particularly remember a “My Fair Lady” spoof called “My Fair Lester” about a guy being schooled to be, you know, what passed for hip in those days.

That is so way way cool. I want a Time Magazine from 1968 (I forget which month, but it had an article about the first dialysis patients)
