Harvesting Our First Coffee Crop – Yes, It Was Bloody.

Raw Coffee Beans on tile table

Most of our coffee crop was destroyed by Patrick the Impaler.

Patrick is the guy that the developers have on site to supervise the “improvements.”  Nancy’s first week living here, Patrick started whacking down our coffee plants. He stopped when confronted with two women (Nancy and her friend Cheryl.)  A topographer (surveyor) was called and sho’ ’nuff the coffee was on our property. It wasn’t even close to being on the property the development owns.

That was seven months ago, the coffee plants still have not been replaced. (Patrick admitted he was wrong and promised to replace the coffee.) We’re still waiting.

In the meantime, on hillsides all over Costa Rica, coffee is being harvested. Mostly by Nicaraguans (because its hard, hot, work for low pay.) Nicas are Costa Ricas migrant workers – imported at very low wages on a temporary basis. They get about $3 a basket and pickers can do 5-7 baskets a day depending on the location.

Not on our finca.

The harvesting falls to the owner and he works for food.

And it was bloody.

Naturally.

If I don’t leave a trail of blood whenever I finish a job, I consider myself a failure.

The dark red beans are the ones that should be harvested and taken to market. The dark beans are dried up and worthless. The fruit covering the beans is easily removed during the drying process.

Nancy and I found the co-op that buys most of the local coffee.

The picture above will be our entire crop.

We won’t be hauling it to the co-op.

Unless I get a blood transfusion.

Gossiping in Costa Rica – I’m Loving It

I’m learning to gossip.

I’m loving it.

In the states, asking “What’s up?” or “Whaddya know?” or “Know anything new?” to a man usually gets a shrug and some generic comment about sports or weather.

Not so in small town Costa Rica.

I’m loving it.

We usually trek into town 4-5 times a week (a four mile drive.) Invariably, I will run into somebody I know. That’s the fun of living in a small town.

I’m loving it.

I grew up in a very tiny town and we lived in small towns during most of my career. Gossip in those towns tended to be of a scandalous nature. Most of the more main-stream gossip ended up in the local paper.

Since there is no local newspaper in Atenas, the only way to learn the “news” is to gossip about it. Running into somebody on the street is an opportunity to find out what’s going on.

For example at Pablo’s party I “learned”:

  • The landslide that is blocking the exit to Atenas off the main artery (Caldera Highway) from San Jose to the Pacific beaches is starting to be cleared. Earth moving equipment has been moved into place.
  • An uncle of President Chinchilla lives just up the road and is planning on building a casino/resort.
  • The developers of the area around our property will have a hard time getting a water well. Lots of dry holes have been dug.
  • SINAC has been visiting the development around us to make sure conservation efforts are underway and being followed.
  • The feria will be moved from the park downtown to a space on the edge of town near the entrance off the Caldera Highway.
  • Some restaurants closed.
  • Wine is on sale for 1/2 price and/or 2fer1 during the grand opening of Coopeatenas. (this was my contribution to the gossip.)
And that was just one evening…
I’m loving it.
Ask “What’s new?” in Costa Rica and you get lots of information.
Accurate? We’ll see.
I’m loving it.

Our Little Lawyer Throws a Helluva Christmas Party

After Nancy and her friend Terri met Pablo, our Costa Rica lawyer, Terri said, “I could eat him up with a spoon.” Her way of saying he was “he’s a cutie.”

He is a small man, but he and his partners throw a helluva a Christmas party.

One of his partners is a partner in Roma Vista – THE place in Atenas to throw a party, even if you’re not a part-owner.

After a couple of very cloudy evenings, the sky cleared and the view was just spectacular. I thanked Pablo for arranging the beautiful light show of San Jose and the central valley. He said it was no problem, he called the meteorologist in San Jose and told him he needed it to be a clear night for his party.

San Jose is about 20 miles as the crow flies. Pablo is well connected apparently.

His party was one of those deals where you walk in and they have those linen coverings on the chairs. I think the last time I saw that was at our daughter’s wedding a bunch o’ years ago.

Cinthia, Pablo’s right hand woman, and my former real estate partner, showed us to Table Cinco and introduced us to Dave and Nansi, James and Patricia. James and Patrica had just closed the deal on buying Dave and Nansi’s house. Shelli and Roberto soon joined us. Shelli and Roberto knew Nancy because they showed her homes to purchase when we were looking.  Nice bunch of people.

The wine started flowing. Nancy found it easier to get a glass of wine than a glass of water. It became a running joke. She asked, and asked, and asked. Finally I went to the bar and asked for agua. When I returned to the table, I realized it was tonic. Nancy asked again, got more wine instead. Shelli and Roberto got served water, but not Nancy.

Eventually she got her water, to the delight of the entire table.

The crowd loosened up and started dancing to work up an appetite. After about an hour of dancing, the food was served. Pork and Chicken and all that kind of stuff. Delish.

Since this was our third party in three nights, we made an early departure – about 11 pm. According to Pablo, who I saw the following morning, we left before the real fun.

Typical for us. We aren’t heavy drinkers or dancers, but it would have been a fun experience to watch drunk Ticos dance. They (women AND men) really know how to swivel their hips. Hips Don’t Lie

Hope Pablo invites again next Christmas to his party. We’ll rest up and stay the duration.
