Another First: Serenaded by a Hitchhiker
Nancy and I were heading into town today to run some errands and do some chores. Since is was farmer’s market day (feria) I commented that Aurora and Anna Victoria may be looking for a ride.
Sure enough, as we rounded the corner to the bus stop, there they sat. She recognized us right away and stuck out her thumb to hitchhike a ride. I was already stopping… because Aurora has a beautiful voice.
The last time I gave them a ride, she was singing quietly as the rest of the children were chattering.
Today, I told her. Atenas? No necessito el dinero… solo encante.
No money is needed, only singing!
She was suitably embarrassed, but deep down, I’m pretty sure she was flattered. She sang us a beautiful song as we clanked along in our janky old beater.
As she sang another, it dawned on me we should record it. I asked her for a third tune and put Nancy’s iPhone out.
She obliged. This wasn’t her best effort, and certainly the percussion effect from the tailgate rattling didn’t add anything. But I can’t wait to give Aurora another ride into town and be serenaded by a hitchhiker.
