Kenya Safari: Is do-it-yourself a wise choice?
We’re not spring chickens! Shocker, I know. We’re at the oldest end of being boomers. And not in the best of physical condition. No exercise, high blood pressure, and more maladies that came into play when deciding what would be the best Africa Safari for us.
Our priority was to see giraffes – lots of them.
Normally our modus operandi would be to book the flights, find hotels and safari guide on our own. We made some epic trips on a do-it-yourself basis and they worked out just fine.
Oh say can you “oiu” by the dawn’s early light… the bombs bursting on Arabs…
We fired up the Google Machine and began the search. We signed up for newsletters and spam email from a bunch of different providers. We consulted with safari experts.
Soon our mailbox was flooded with travel catalogs – thick, four color glossy photo magazines as well as single card marketing pieces. And the email newsletters and offers were thick also. And of course, every ad Google served us was about travel to Africa
After a month or two of being totally overwhelmed by the task, we came to the conclusion that our African Safari was out of our reach for a DIY trip.
We decided that we wanted someone else to handle all the details. A travel agency. After looking for a local travel agency – we never found one – we started scouring the inner-web.
Aside: we eventually found a local travel agency but they seemed more interested in the “easy” trips to more highly-traveled places. Remember the old days when HAD to use an agent to book airfare?
Turns out, inquiring if a tour would include seeing giraffes was like asking if visiting Wisconsin we would see cows.
Safari tour agencies touted the Big Five – the term given animals based on hunting and killing them to mount over the fireplace. Not in our wheelhouse.
- Cape buffalo
Concluding that every African Safari would give us our fill of giraffes, the next chore was deciding how long a safari we could mentally and physically endure.
