I’m not a foodie. Years of using Flonase nasal spray for allergies pretty much killed my sense of smell – if it’s subtle I ain’t smellin’ (or tastin’) it. That’s why my years as a restaurant columnist for the local newspaper focused on the experience, not so much the taste of the food!
Give me a grilled cheese and a Diet Coke and I’m good.
But I do enjoy the effort. And the food service staff on our Kenya Safari really put forth the effort at every single one of our meals. The only time we ordered from the menu was when we were road.
(Slideshow may take a while to load.)
Buffets were the order of business for breakfast and lunch.
Breakfast was prepared to order at the buffet station. Omelet station, pancake station, oatmeal, cereals, variety of juices, etc. Typical breakfast fare.
Dinner always had a choice of two entrees and sides, along with a choice of desserts. One couple was vegetarian and they raved about their alternative. If you are a snacker – bring your own. Every time something was served to us, it was a pleasure to behold. And the servers were always accommodating.
No plastic dinnerware here – as you can imagine.
First beer or glass of wine (red or white) with lunch and dinner was included. Bottled water, coffee and tea was always available. I’m still not sure when water with a meal was free! Sometimes we got a large bottle to share. Other times, we got individual bottles that we paid for. Bottled water during game drives was free and plentiful.
The only less-than-stellar meal – others said – was at The Carnivore restaurant near Nairobi on our way home. It’s an all you can eat meat place. The meat was either dry or tough. I think we got the “tour group” treatment.
By the way, “hotel” in Kenya is not a place to lay your head for the night. It’s a small food place. In Costa Rica they are called “sodas” in France a “bistro” in the U.S. a “joint” or “hole-in-the-wall” “greasy spoon.”
But we didn’t come for the food!
